The Panama Canal By Air
Threatening clouds raced shoreward for the second day. Uncooperative weather slowed us down a bit, it took over 30 minutes to get everyone launched from the narrow, cluttered beach. This was a practice day so we weren't really trying to launch together but it would be interesting to see how long it took. The flight was still amazing, in spite of the bumps and limited options. Jungle carpeted mountains flowed into the sea along a varied coastline.
I marveled at just being here, airborne in a place that yesterday was, to me, a place from geography class -a squeeze of land connecting the Americas with a famous canal. Noriega, mosquitoes and dirt roads is what I remembered most before this all started... more

Panama 9° 80°
Flight for Life
By Miriam Butterman
An adrenaline junkie’s vision turns into a selfless endeavor and a record-breaking event in Panama’s most renowned route.
Since the days of its construction, adventurers and travelers have crossed the Panama Canal by foot, by train, and by boat. Adding to the list on May 3, 2008, were eight of the worlds most enthusiastic Powered Paragliders, or Paramotorers, with their ocean-to-ocean flight over this strategic passage.
From afar, powered paragliding looks much like a parasail, but it is actually an even simpler device, with a more efficient design. The pilot is harnessed into a swing like seat, with a backpack motor unit and propeller strapped on his back. Attached to him is a 26-square meter elliptical shaped parachute and he remains suspended to the chute by incredibly strong lines, which he uses to glide and climb at his own will. One can drag his foot over the ground’s surface or fly up to 15,000 ft in elevation, higher than the birds, with the atmosphere and canopy of trees swallowing you up below.
When Remy Swaab, President of the Panama Powermotor Association explained this, I imagined him gliding through the air, much the way I fly in my dreams: Easily and without force, dropping down with a sudden descent that makes my stomach turn wherever I desire. And while this sport is supposedly simple, launching oneself, running five or six steps with an 80 pound engine strapped to your back and yanked by an enormous kite, can however, be quite challenging and much more lucid than the experience in one’s imagination. ... more

They will attempt to cross from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean flying over the Panama Canal. The fact that authorization has been obtained to fly over the Panama Canal is unique, due to the high security restrictions concerning that specific airspace. The reason that authorization has been obtained is due to the fact that besides establishing a world record, the event has a greater good. The proceeds from their sponsors will be donated entirely to a local charity foundation called FANLYC ("Foundation of Friends of the Children with Leukemia and Cancer"). more...
